How can you make a difference?
Under the supervision of the Chief, Social Policy and Advocacy section in Kampala, the Consultant will support the section with multiple deliverables including; development of a publication of a book for Africa’s Poorest children, TV series on lives of children in Uganda, mapping of basic services required by children and adolescents in Kampala. Develop human stories of adolescent girls, revising the child-focused policy research agenda and support in SPA’s planned research outputs.
Key Tasks:
- Support in the development of a publication of a book ‘What works for Africa’s Poorest children?’’ – Consolidating papers presented at the international conference on ‘What Works for Africa’s Poorest Children?’, organized by UNICEF Uganda in collaboration with the Economic Policy and Research Centre (EPRC) and the University of Manchester in Kampala in September 2018. This publication on child poverty in Africa aims at contributing to global efforts to end child poverty by generating key insights on practical actions, programmes and social policy interventions that have made a tangible difference in the lives of Africa’s poorest children.
- Support in the development of TV series on lives of children in Uganda – Supporting in the development of a TV series on children in Uganda, with the purpose of highlighting and creating awareness of various areas of children’s rights in Uganda, while simultaneously providing a voice to children and the public. The TV series will include a minimum of 20 episodes, each episode being 25 minutes long, and each focusing on a specific area of child rights.
- Develop a mapping of basic services required by children and adolescents in Kampala – Collect data to map services relevant to adolescents in Kampala in the sectors of education, health and protection, to inform and support in the social protection programming of the section.
- Develop human stories of adolescent girls in Kampala – Collect data and compile human stories of adolescent girls in Kampala, reflecting their daily lives, thereby creating awareness of challenges faced by adolescents in Kampala.
- Revising the child-focused policy research agenda – On the basis of the new Child Poverty and Deprivation Analysis, expected to be published in Q4 2018, revise the National Child-Focused Research Agenda.
- Support in SPA’s planned research outputs – Building on to the evidence generated over the last months, support the finalization and dissemination of several research outputs.
To qualify asan advocate for every child you will have…
- Advanced university degree in law, Human Rights, social/political sciences or other relevant field.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional work experience at national and international level in analysis, research and advocacy;
- Extensive experience elaborating analytical studies as well as producing timely and high quality analytical research.
- Knowledge on children’s rights;
- Excellent analytical, communication, advocacy and research skills;
- Computer literacy, especially MS Office programmes, is required;
- Proficiency in at least one of the UNICEF working languages: English, French or Spanish and fluent in the working language of the office (English);
- Knowledge of the Uganda context is preferred;
- Understanding of local institutional, policy and legal frameworks is preferred.
