Org. Setting and Reporting
These positions are located in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in Tombouctou and Bamako. Tombouctou is classified as an “E” hardship duty station and a non-family duty station. Bamako is classified as an “D” hardship duty station and a non-family duty station The incumbent reports to the Head of Office and to Chief of Division Political.
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was established by Security Council resolution 2100 of 25 April 2013 to support political processes in that country and carry out a number of security-related tasks. By unanimously adopting resolution 2164 of 25 June 2014, the Council further decided that the Mission should focus on duties, such as ensuring security, stabilization and protection of civilians; supporting national political dialogue and reconciliation; and assisting the reestablishment of State authority, the rebuilding of the security sector, and the promotion and protection of human rights in that country. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required. Experience working in the Headquarters of the United Nations or of any other similar large organization is desirable. Experience working in the office of a senior official and/or as a Special Assistant (or similar) to a senior public official is desirable. West Africa and Sahel experience is desirable. Experience working in a peacekeeping operation, special political mission or any other field operation is desirable. Experience of leadership in multi-cultural settings, including management and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams, is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.
Assessment
