Mission and objectives

OUR VISION The UN-Habitat’s vision of “a better quality of life for all in an urbanizing world” is bold and ambitious. UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty. OUR MISSION UN-Habitat works in over 90 countries to promote transformative change in cities and human settlements through knowledge, policy advice, technical assistance and collaborative action. UN-Habitat’s new strategic plan 2020-2023 adopts a more strategic and integrated approach to solving the challenges and opportunities of twenty-first century cities and other human settlements. Our mission embodies the four main roles of the organization, which can be summarized as: think, do, share and partner.

The specialist volunteer will contribute to the timely and efficient implementation of multiple projects of UN-Habitat, including the implementation of the Joint Programme on Sustainable Cities in Rwanda. Joint Programme on Sustainable Cities 2020-2023: One UN Rwanda’s Joint Programme on Sustainable Cities intends to bring urbanisation to the forefront of the country’s development agenda. The aim of the Joint Programme is to integrate the diverse issues and lessons learned from individual projects and programmes into one programme that will tackle multi- sectoral urban challenges on a much larger scale than before. The overall objective of this proposed Joint Programme on Sustainable Cities is to increase the capacity of Rwandan cities to better manage existing challenges and prevent future ones. These challenges are related to urban poverty, unemployment, poor housing and underdeveloped infrastructure, natural and human-made disasters, as well as constraints on productivity, safety and security, especially for women and girls. The Joint Programme will support Rwanda to create livable and inclusive cities that provide security, access to jobs, decent housing and a better quality of life for all citizens. The Joint Programme is being implemented with the contribution of several UN Agencies including UN-WOMEN, FAO, ILO, UNEP and UN-Habitat and implementing partners including the Government institutions. Among other projects under the Joint Programme, the volunteer will provide technical support to the below projects: Growing Smarter Sustainable Mobility in East Africa (2018-2022): The Growing Smarter project is being implemented in partnership with Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and in 4 countries: Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
