WeWorld-GVC began working in Kenya in 2010 with a privately funded project (distance support) in Migori and Narok County and the slums of Nairobi. The leading sector has remained primary and pre-primary education, but depending on the needs of individual areas of intervention, projects have ranged from women’s empowerment (micro-credit in slums), to protecting children affected/infected by AIDS (Migori) and girls who are victims or at risk of female genital mutilation (Narok), to advocacy in education to promote access to and quality of primary and especially pre-primary schooling, which is still not widespread in the Kenyan context. In the last 3-5 years, action has focused on arid and semi-arid areas-Migori, Narok, Isiolo counties-and on combating malnutrition, which has become one of the main pillars of intervention, around which, from a multi-sectoral perspective, several closely related areas revolve: access to water, promotion of good hygiene and nutritional practices, eco-sustainable agricultural production of foods with high nutritional value, empowerment of women, education for change of new generations, advocacy in nutrition and sanitation, inter-institutional and civil society-institutional dialogue.
