WUSC – World University Service of Canada – is a leading Canadian non-profit organization in international development, committed to providing education, employment, and empowerment opportunities that improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged youth around the world. WUSC and WIK are implementing The Learning through Education and Access to Employment Pathways (LEAP) in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps and in nearby hosting communities in Turkana County, Kenya.
LEAP aims to aim to increase empowerment aims among girls and young women in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps, and in nearby hosting communities in Turkana County, Kenya.
Girls in these areas are considered to be particularly vulnerable and in need of support. Opportunities to access quality education in schools are very limited in these areas and support for girls’ education is very low in the community relative to that for boys. Through the remedial component, (LEAP will provide digital learning services to girls in primary and secondary school. The remedial classes seek to improve girls’ performance, improve attendance and retention at school, and address the contextual, cultural, and social perceptions affecting girls in Kakuma camps (Kalobeyei Settlement and Kakuma Refugee Camp) and host communities in Turkana County
World University Service of Canada (WUSC) under the LEAP project is looking for a service provider with technical expertise in delivering a tablet-based learning software for both primary and secondary school learners under the remedial component.
Scope of Work
In the past three years, WUSC piloted the use of Edtech in Kakuma and Dadaab camps as well as host communities. We have had mixed results on the impact of digital learning. One of the key barriers to the uptake of Edtech is access to learning devices. WUSC is keen to implement Edtech by eliminating the access barriers and, and assess its impact on the learning process. Our remedial program targets smaller groups of lower-achieving or at-risk students for such remedial interventions. As an innovative and low-cost intervention, the model is designed to improve girls’ academic performance.
The project works with 15 schools. The target group for the tablet-based learning software is 700+ school-going girls at risk of dropping out. These learners are enrolled in standards 7, 8, Form 1, and Form 2 in the LEAP remedial program. The project currently has seven (7) remedial centers out of the fifteen (15) project schools. The focus is to provide appropriate learning and teaching resource materials targeting learners from a wide range (emergent, established, and proficient learners), that are age-appropriate. Learning material should be aligned with Kenya’s Ministry of Education curriculum to promote digital literacy and numeracy skills
