The Tem Mais pharmacy network is a USAID financed initiative to offer malaria case management through private pharmacies in Angola. Tem Mais or “there is more” in English, launched in April 2014 in Huambo province with 50 pharmacies with the following objectives:
Standardize malaria case management in the private sector, particularly in pharmacies where 25% of the population seek care when ill
Reduce economic burden by reducing overuse of antimalarials through a price formula designed to incentivize testing before treatment
Prevent drug resistance by reducing empiric use of antimalarials
Although a brand new service in Angola, the community uptake was immediate as evidenced by strong sales. Clients are comfortable having mRDT service performed in the pharmacies and receive their prescription, if positive, for malaria. A project assessment in the initial year resulted in a project restructure and consequently a review of the selection criteria, a new pricing model with a substantially higher price and the creation of a marketing plan.
In October 2015, activities relaunched in Huambo and expanded to Uige province with a total of 74 pharmacies and implementing the changes resulting from the assessment. The project continues to show great success with a high number of clients accessing the service in both provinces. The team is now looking for technical assistance to develop a business plan to allow Tem Mais to flourish beyond donor support scheduled to end in September 2016.
The Tem Mais pharmacy network already has some sustainability features mainly its distribution model and malaria treatment procurement through an innovative partnership with a local private sector partner. Its vision is to become fully sustainable (i.e. not dependent on donor funding) by generating profit through offering services and products to the pharmacies in Angola.
